Your Next Ferrari Will Read Your Mind
What with all the 458 Italias blowing up, not to mention Hugh Grants high speed shutdown, Ferrari is understandably a little more concerned about safety these days. Thats hardly been top priority in the past, what with all the sex appeal and speed. While we wouldnt exactly say that future Ferraris will resemble Volvos, the famed Italian marque is apparently taking steps to ensure that their vehicles dont lag behind the competition when it comes to the latest technology for making every outing a safe one. Autocar reports that Ferrari has applied for a new patent on systems that monitor a drivers mental and physical state in order to adjust the vehicles stability and traction control systems to avoid potential accidents resulting from a loss of control. But does anyone really want that in a Ferrari?
The patent describes the installation of a series of sensors, located around a cars cabin, which constantly monitors a drivers state. Drivers tend to miscalculate in particular, overestimate their driving skill and, more importantly, their psychophysical condition, with the result that driver-selected dynamic vehicle performance simply reflects the drivers wish, as opposed to the drivers actual psychophysical condition and proficiency, the application states. By monitoring your respiration rate, blood pressure and heart rates, eye movement and blink rates, brainwave activity, body temperature and the conductivity of your skin, your future Ferrari will be more like a mind reader or a wet nurse than the supercars we know and love today.
