Boardwalk Empire: Worlds Most Expensive TV Show
HBOs Boardwalk Empire is a period piece that combines two of the viewing publics current fascinations: mobsters and period pieces. It something like The Sopranos meets Mad Men, with an extraordinary cast featuring Steve Buscemi as the central character and is directed by Martin Scorcese. The show centers around the life of a politician and gangster in Atlantic City in the 1920s. Its basically the perfect storm of Hollywood bigwigs meeting cable magic.
This kind of magic isnt cheap, however. The pilot episode of the show cost HBO a record-breaking $50 million to produce. No doubt that the combination of elaborate sets, period costumes, big name cast members, and high production values is the reason behind the immensely high price. Previously, the record for most expensive TV pilot was held by Lost.
