Auction Watch: John Lennons Ferrari at Bonhams
A 1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe, the first car that John Lennon bought upon passing his driving test in 1965, is being offered at for sale at Bonhams Paris sale of Motor Cars at the Grand Palais on Feb. 5th. Estimated at 120,000 170,000, its painted French racing blue. Lennon of course had his pick of posh vehicles at the time; getting his license was such a news event that sports car dealers thronged the gates of Kenwood, his Tudor Revival estate in Surrey, UK. From a dazzling selection of Aston Martins, Maseratis and Jaguars the Beatle selected the blue Ferrari which set him back 2,000.
A few months later Lennon added a Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine, later famously painted in psychedelic colours, and a Mini to his garage. In his book, John Lennon Imagined: Cultural History of a Rock Star, Janne Mkel notes that Lennon used the Mini for pottering about in, the Rolls for relaxing and the Ferrari for zoom. Lennon did not keep the Ferrari, one of only 1,088 built, for very long, but as we all know pretty much anything with his provenance turns to gold, so expect the price to rocket higher.
