A few months back, Swarovski Elements commissioned 22 famous designers, including Giorgio Armani, Givenchy, Lanvin, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Martin Grant and Sonia Rykiel, to create a Swarovski crystal-studded little black dress each for charity. This time, the product brand for Swarovski crystal has collaborated with six Korean designers to blend the sparkle of the companys signature crystals with Korean hanbok (traditional Korean dress) and other lifestyle accessories. For the project, Swarovski Korea selected the designers Kim Young-seok, Chai Young-jin Kim, Beak Oak-soo, Hanbok Lynn, Hyojae and Yoon-eui Hanbok. In a statement, Swarovski said

The cooperation (between Swarovski and Korean designers) is designed to position the worlds finest crystal elements within the hanbok segment and illustrate how Korean tradition can be harmoniously melded with modernity to suit the demands of todays market.

The upshot of the collaboration was showcased at the Han by Swarovski Elements exhibition at Art Link in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul. The designers cited that using Swarovski crystals add much style to their unique and modern hanbok designs.

What designers had to say?

Chai Youngjin Kim, who has also worked as a director with the Louis Vuitton Korea fashion team, said

I always try to use new materials, but it is very important how it can harmonize with my design. If we study and understand more about Swarovski Elements, there would be more possibilities to make creative designs If we use Swarovski Elements in our traditional design, it will become more unique and fresh.

Designer Hyojae said

I envied the global brands value and the positive image. It was time that I understood Swarovski Elements more.

Yoon -eui Hanbok, well known for her royal hanboks, said

I expressed the first encounter between hanbok and Swarovski into traditional Korean flower motifs It was such a pity that I didnt have much time to understand Swarovski Elements. I will develop various products by using the charm of Swarovski Elements.

Kim Young-seok, one of the top three designer brands in hanbok fashion, said

Swarovski is well known globally, and many international designers have worked with the crystals. Therefore when we use Swarovski Elements in our traditional design, then it will become more familiar and easier to feel closer to foreigners. Swarovski can be a medium between foreigners and us.

Designer Hanbok Lynn cited

I thought it was difficult to decorate with crystals, but through this exhibition, I feel more at ease.

The project is part of Swarovskis long tradition of working with the worlds renowned designers in artistic projects.
